Writing Centers General Information

Our Mission

The Tri-Campus Writing Centers exist to support and coordinate the writing efforts of students and instructors at UConn’s Hartford, Torrington, and Waterbury campuses. The Writing Centers extend the interactive drafting work of the classroom by offering students access to trained professional and peer tutors. Our staff engages writers of all proficiency levels in one-on-one tutoring sessions aimed at developing discipline-specific writing skills and student self-sufficiency.

The Tri-Campus Writing Center works to ensure that students and instructors receive the level of quality, comprehensive support required by UConn’s ambitious writing program. We’re always adding new announcements, resources, links, and other helpful materials to our evolving website, so take the time to look around!

Freshman English and "W" Courses

UConn students are engaged throughout their careers at the three campuses in using writing as a means for intellectual inquiry, reflection, and communication. This process is organized around the reading of challenging texts across the disciplines. Thus, the writing in these courses is guided by the common goal of teaching students how to write in the context of other writers and readers. To that end, instructors in Freshman English and in W courses treat writing as a process of drafting and revision, emphasizing the discursive and dynamic qualities of written communication. The Tri-Campus Writing Center supports Freshman English and W course instructors by providing them with information and resources related to writing instruction and supporting them in the implementation of University writing policies.

Preparation

No preparation is necessary. We will assist students who have not yet begun an assignment. We will assist students who are having difficulty coming up with ideas. And, of course, we will assist with the revision of essays that are fully or almost fully drafted. Nonetheless, instructors can help ensure a productive tutoring session by providing students with a written assignment sheet with clear writing goals or by contacting the Writing Center directly with information about course goals and policies. We would be happy to visit classrooms to introduce the Writing Center to students, but we are here, too, to learn from and communicate with faculty and students. We look forward to speaking with you and working with your students.
